If you love off-grid camping surrounded by rugged red rock ranges, vast open skies and classic Pilbara scenery, then Tiger Eye Pool should be high on your list. Located just outside Tom Price in the heart of Western Australia’s Pilbara region, Tiger Eye Pool is one of those special inland camp spots that will completely surprise you. And it’s 100% Tommy Campers approved.
Tommy owners Wim & Sam – travelling with a Tommy Camper S6X – spent a few days camping at Tiger Eye Pool to kick off their Pilbara adventure, just before heading into Karijini National Park. What was meant to be a simple overnight stop quickly turned into one of their favourite free camps in Western Australia.
“The combination of red iron-rich ranges, spinifex-covered hills and the sheer sense of space made Tiger Eye Pool hard to leave. It’s peaceful, scenic and feels far more remote than it actually is. A rare combination when you are this close to town.”

Why this campground is perfect for Tommy Campers
Set among the striking red and green hills of the Pilbara, Tiger Eye Pool offers free, off-grid camping with plenty of space and multiple camping options. It’s raw, peaceful and incredibly scenic. Exactly the kind of spot a fully self-contained setup like a Tommy Camper was built for.
There are no facilities, no booking system, and no formal campground layout. If you time your visit well, crowds are limited. Instead, you are rewarded with open space, dramatic Pilbara landscapes, and evenings spent around a campfire under the stars.
For those travelling with a Tommy Camper, Tiger Eye Pool allows you to enjoy genuine off-grid camping without sacrificing comfort. Everything you need is already with you, which makes places like this easy to enjoy and easy to respect.

Where is Tiger Eye Pool?
You’ll find Tiger Eye Pool about a 15-minute drive from Tom Price. While it’s close to town, the location isn’t signposted. Knowing where to turn off is important.
If you’re using WikiCamps, Tiger Eye Pool is clearly marked and easy to locate. Once you leave the main road, it’s a short drive down to the camping area.
Do you need a 4WD to access Tiger Eye Pool?
Yes, a high-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended to access Tiger Eye Pool.
The entrance track can be rocky and uneven, with muddy sections depending on the season and recent rainfall. High clearance makes all the difference here. Once you’re through the initial access, the tracks around are generally easy and manageable.
There are a few steeper tracks leading up into the surrounding hills that are more challenging, but these are completely optional. Wim & Sam drove up one of the steeper tracks and were rewarded with incredible views and complete solitude, but there are excellent camping spots without needing to tackle these sections.
Camping options at Tiger Eye Pool

When you arrive, you can choose to:

- Follow the track all the way to the top of the hill for elevated views
- Head into the hills to the left or right to find more secluded and private campsites
The main Tiger Eye Pool area offers multiple spots that can fit different kinds of setups.

What to do at Tiger Eye Pool
Despite being close to town, Tiger Eye feels like a proper escape. Here’s how you make the most of your stay
Stargazing
With minimal light pollution, nights at Tiger Eye Pool offer incredible stargazing. Once the sun goes down, the Milky Way becomes clearly visible, stretching across the sky. Sitting by the fire and watching the stars come out is easily one of the highlights of camping here.
Relax and take in the views
The contrast of red rocks, the spinifex and bright blue sky is classic Pilbara scenery. Set up your chair, enjoy the silence and soak it all in.
Tiger Eye Pool
Depending on the season, you can find a mix of shallow creeks and deeper pools, perfect for cooling off after a hot Pilbara Day. When Wim & Sam visited during winter, there was no water present, so it’s important not to rely on it being available. Conditions vary greatly throughout the year.
Visit Tom Price
Tom Price is well worth a visit when you’re in the area. You can book a Rio Tinto Iron Ore Mine Site Tour through the visitor centre, which offers insight into one of Australia’s most significant mining operations. Alternatively, enjoy a relaxed coffee or pick up a fresh pie or pastry from the local bakery.
Mount Nameless
Mount Nameless stands 1,128 metres above sea level and offers sweeping 360-degree views across the Hamersley Range and the town of Tome Price. A return hike to the summit and back takes around three hours. The mountain can be accessed via walking trails or a dedicated 4WD track, depending on how adventurous you are feeling.
Explore Karijini
One of the biggest advantages of camping at Tiger Eye Pool is its proximity to Karijini National Park. It is an excellent place to set up camp before heading out to explore one of Western Australia’s most impressive national parks with gorges, waterfalls and dramatic landscapes.
