Every Tommy Camper has a story. From tackling wild 4WD tracks to staying at remote beach camps, clever modifications and builds, and hard-learned lessons along the way. Each month, we highlight the story of one of our legendary owners to hear how they’ve built their setup and where they’ve taken it. This month, we’re getting a full rundown of Matt and Ursula’s 2024 Hilux with Tommy Camper S6X.

Meet Matt & Ursula

Some people fall in love with travel. Others fall in love with fishing. And then there are those lucky few, like Matt & Ursula, who manage to combine both. If you ever scroll past @matt.and.ursch.travel on Instagram, you’ll probably see the two of them somewhere near the water. Rods in hand, smiles on their faces, and exploring Australia with their 2024 Hilux and Tommy Camper S6X.
Their build? A 2024 Extra Cab Toyota Hilux with a Tommy Camper S6X on the back, and towing a boat. Perfect for the kind of life they live right now. Part-time travel with full-time enthusiasm. While they’re not on the road permanently (yet), the dream is definitely there.
Matt and Ursula are the type of travellers who know exactly what they love. Time on the water, the freedom to tow a boat, and a simple setup that doesn’t get in the way of adventure. And that’s exactly how they ended up with a Tommy Camper.

Why did you choose a Tommy Camper?
For Matt and Ursula, choosing a Tommy was less of a question and more of a natural decision.
“We chose The Tommy as it’s the perfect set-up for us as we love to fish & tow a boat. It makes travelling & camping so simple with ease of setup & pack-down.”
But it wasn’t just towing capability that sealed the deal.
“We love that there is a seating area inside which allows you to be comfortable out of the weather. We also liked the fact you could buy the Tommy fully customised or if you’re handy you could fit it out yourself.”

Tommy Campers #936
Matt and Ursula’s setup is the perfect balance between practicality and capability. Exactly what you want when travelling with a boat and living out of a slide-on camper.
They had a Lovells GVM upgrade on the Hilux pre-rego to make sure the vehicle could safely handle the extra weight. Smart move and highly recommended for anyone building a touring setup.
Then came their electrical setup up, which they did themselves. The result? A seriously capable off-grid powerhouse:
- 300ah ATG lithium Battery
- Enerdrive 2000w Inverter
- Victron DCDC charger
- Victron MPPT
- Victron 240v charger
- 430w Flexi Solar Panel on the roof of the Tommy
This system allows them to run a 130 liter Bushman’s Fridge, an induction cooker, their coffee machine and their hot water system.
Speaking of hot water. This is one of their favourite features. They run a 10L Duoetto MKII hot water system and mounted a 23 Zero shower tent.
“The ability to have a shower, even a quick one, is such a bonus.”
And let’s be honest, anyone who returned salty and sunburnt from a day on the boat knows just how good that first rinse feels.

Tips for New Tommy Owners?
After plenty of weekends away, and more fishing trips than they can probably count, Matt and Ursula have a few simple but solid pieces of advice for anyone starting out with a Tommy Camper.
Firstly: Choose the X-version.
Whether you’re choosing an S4X or S6X, they reckon the little extra room makes a noticeable difference to life inside the camper.
“It just adds that bit more space.”
And when you’re living in a small space, every centimetre counts.
Secondly: Invest in a good electrical and solar setup
Even if you’re not planning to run induction cookers or coffee machines, reliable power gives you freedom. More days off-grid. More remote spots. More adventure without compromise.
