Meet Emma…

Meet Emma, or better known as Difflock Doc!

Based on the Sunshine Coast, Emma works as a rural GP, although she admits she’s probably better known among friends and family for her travel misadventures than her medical advice!

…And her Super Duty Camper

Last year, while most people were still waiting to see the new Ford Ranger Super Duty in the flesh, Emma had already put down deposits on both a Tommy Camper and a Super Duty.

Bold? Maybe.

But today, Emma is one of the first Tommy owners in Australia running a Super Duty camper setup, pairing her Ford Ranger Super Duty Space Cab with Tommy Campers S6X #1109 and a custom Tommy Tray.

“At the moment, I’m a part-time traveller, but the goal is to do a lap of Australia in the next year or so.”

Emma has owned her Tommy Camper for only about 12 weeks, and FIFO work has kept her away for half of that time. But she’s already putting her Super Duty camper through its paces.

“So far, I’ve done a few weekend trips around the Sunshine Coast to break in the camper and get used to setting it up. I’ve also spent some days on the beach learning how to drive on sand”.

Emma’s first big test with her Super Duty Camper is coming up in July, when she’ll be heading off for three months across the Simpson Desert, exploring the Kimberley and visiting Arnhem Land.

Why did you choose a Tommy Camper?

Emma’s decision started with a trip.

“My brothers have been planning this trip to Simpson and Kimberley for a few years. At the beginning of 2025, I decided I wanted to join them. Just because I didn’t have a partner with a ute or a 4WD setup shouldn’t mean I can’t!”

In April 2025, Emma saw Bush and Bay’s YouTube video on their Tommy Campers S6X, and she decided that was the camper she wanted.

The next challenge was finding the right vehicle.

“I originally got quotes for a D-MAX, but after spending a lot of time itemising camper weights, making packing lists, and calculating modification weights, I realised I needed something with a higher GVM. That’s when the Super Duty entered the picture.”

For Emma, several things about Tommy Campers stood out.

“I didn’t want to be towing something alone as an inexperienced tower, and I also didn’t want to restrict where I could travel”

Emma was looking for something where she could:

  • Lock the door at night
  • A place to get dressed
  • A portable toilet inside so she could do a sneaky wee at night without having to get up in the dark and squat

Tommy Campers #1109

One thing Emma knew from day one was exactly how she wanted to use her Super Duty camper.

“One of the very first things I told Amelia I’d like in my build, even though it wasn’t an option at the time, was a coffee machine.”

Who doesn’t want a good coffee to accompany an amazing sunrise while camping?

Her second non-negotiable? A hot shower.

“Whilst I’m happy to get muddy and dirty during the day, I want a hot shower before bed.”

Those two requirements largely shaped the electrical system behind her Super Duty camper.

Electrical setup

  • REDARC 300Ah Lithium Battery
  • REDARC Manager Alpha 75
  • REDARC 3000W Inverter
  • 2x 200W Solar Panels

“So far, the electrical system hasn’t missed a beat. I even jump-started my car when I had a flat battery.”

Why the Tommy Campers Tray?

Emma also chose a custom Tommy Campers Tray.

“I decided to complete the package with the Tommy Campers Tray because I liked the peace of mind knowing it was designed specifically for carrying a fully loaded Tommy Camper.”

The storage setup includes front and rear under-tray toolboxes, plus a rear trundle drawer.

“The beauty of the Super Duty’s extra ground clearance is that I could still fit the trundle drawer without losing the spare tyre underneath.”

It now also gives Emma the option of carrying a second spare on the back of the camper for more remote trips.

Emma’s opinion about the Super Duty

One thing Emma appreciates about her Super Duty camper is that it doesn’t require immediate modifications before heading away.

“The amazing thing about the Super Duty is that you don’t need to do any car modifications straight away and can start using it with the Tommy from day one while still being comfortable with your GVM.”

That doesn’t mean she’s finished though… Emma is working with McCormacks 4WD in Brisbane to create a multi-stage plan. Mainly because it’s a very expensive hobby.

Phase one – before the big Simpson and Kimberley trip – includes:

  • A bullbar
  • Winch
  • Long-range fuel tank
  • UHF

Advice for new Tommy Owners

“If you’re thinking about a Tommy, do it. You won’t regret it.”

And if you’ve just purchased one, Emma can only advise you to get out and start using it. She believes it’s the quickest way to figure out how to tailor the setup to suit you.

She also credits the amazing Tommy community for helping shape her build.

“Don’t forget to share your hacks! I found the Tommy community incredibly helpful while planning my build.”
