Every Tommy Camper has a story, and so do the people behind the builds. This month, we’re introducing one of the newest faces on the Tommy Campers team: Maddie! Our apprentice auto sparky and all-round wiring wizard.
Meet Maddie!
From the moment a new Tommy rolls into the workshop, Maddie is the one making sure every electrical component is fitted perfectly. From batteries and inverters, to lights, diesel heaters, solar panels, and electric roofs. She’s the reason that when you drive away with your camper, everything is working perfectly and wired up to your car in the neatest unrecognisable way.
“My days are a mix of problem-solving and hands-on work, ensuring campers run smoothly and safely. From making up all the 12v powerkits, wiring the inverters and batteries, lights, electric roofs, and everything else the Tommy has to offer. Pretty much anything with wires! Every camper is a bit different, which keeps things interesting. You never stop learning.”
From career change to Camper life
Maddie didn’t plan to be an auto electrician. In fact, her career path looked very different before she joined Tommy Campers. But with a love for camping, travelling, and getting her hands dirty, she decided to make the leap into a trade, and hasn’t look back.
Now, as an apprentice auto electrician, she’s soaking up every bit of knowledge she can. The workshop is fast-paced, the work varied, and the team? Like a second family! There’s always something new, whether it’s figuring out a custom power setup for an owner heading off-grid, or wiring a tricky mod so it looks clean and professional.
“The team has been amazing! Everyone is willing to teach, share tips, and help each other out. It’s the kind of environment where you can have a laugh, but also take real pride in what you build.”
What her dream set up Would look like
When you work with Tommy Campers every day, it’s impossible not to dream about your own setup. For Maddie, her dream Tommy setup would be a Tommy Camper S4X, which fits perfectly on her N80 Hilux, allowing that extra room being an X model, with every upgrade she can get her hands on:

- I would 100% recommend a diesel heater – it completely changes winter camping
- Central locking is worth it – especially if you’re in and out of the camper a lot and that extra sense of safety

“What inspires me most about the camper community is the shared love for the outdoors. I love seeing where people take their Tommys. It’s amazing to see how the Tommy Community comes together to explore new places, share tips and stories, and support each other along the way. The photos and videos on social media are the living proof that these campers really do take you anywhere. And it’s pretty cool knowing I played a part in building it.”
